The Benjamin Banneker Summer Academy is a six-week
summer program providing unique culturally-based educational
experiences to advance the math, science, computer skills, and
motivational needs of 6th-8th grade youth identified as having
academic and leadership potential.
These young men and women are diverse
in their economic levels and cultural backgrounds, but are alike in
that they are doing well, but are capable of doing even better. They
are succeeding, but not yet reaching their full potential.
Without the Banneker Academy, these
achievers might get overlooked in the midst of educational programs
which focus only on youth who are academically and behaviorally at
risk. Their thirst to learn more often goes unrecognized and
unsatisfied.
The Academy is named after Benjamin
Banneker, the first African American in the United States to publish
scientific and astronomical materials. This almanac was published
yearly and foretold the future movement of the stars. |
Academy participants are human
“stars” who are encouraged to become globally competent through
both classroom and non-classroom leadership experiences.
The Benjamin Banneker Summer Academy
has repeatedly met its annual outcomes for identifying
highly-motivated and competent students, and rewarding and
challenging them and their family support systems.
